Specialties

AWARE/Fish Identification - This one-day/two dive course probably
offers more "bang for the buck" than any other specialty course.
After two hours of classroom preparation, you should be able to
identify at least 50 species of fish.  We then will do two reef dives.
The first allows you to practice fish identification techniques; on the
second dive you will conduct a fish species and abundance survey, the
data from which will be entered into the REEF database to support
research and conservation efforts.  $250 including materials.

AWARE/Coral Reef Conservation - A one-day introduction to the coral
reef ecosystem.  Topics include the importance of the coral reef, an
introduction to coral anatomy and physiology, related ecosystems, coral
reefs in peril, and proper interaction with the living reef.  Two hours
of classroom and two optional reef dives.  $125-$250 including
materials.

PADI Underwater Naturalist - A one-day/two-dive introduction to
marine life.  Topics include marine life mythology, a basic survey of
marine life and relationships between marine animals, and responsible
human interactions with the underwater environment.  Three hours of
classroom and two reef dives.  $250 including materials.

Reef Condition (RECON) Diver - This is a brand new course under the
auspices of The Ocean Conservancy.  A two-day/four-dive course to
add to your knowledge of coral reef ecosystems, teach you how to
identify common stony (reef-building) corals, reef algae and key reef
organisms, and train you in simple underwater data-collection
techniques.  The information collected during your dives will be entered
into databases to help scientists and managers monitor the health of
our coral reefs.  $300 including materials and PADI Distinctive
Specialty certification
